10. I am not a Catholic, my former spouse was not Catholic. Why is the Catholic
Church looking into the marriage?

The Church enters into the investigation of a marriage when asked by the Petitioner. It is
not initiated by the Church, but by one who wishes to know if he is free and has the right
to marry, or if he is bound by a previous marriage. The Tribunal would only accept a
petition for declaration of nullity if the petitioner is a Catholic or wants to marry in the
Catholic Church. back
